Named in Memory
YOUNGSTERS have seen their winning entry into the naming game come to life in memory of a special local figure.
Pupils from Ravensworth Junior School in Normanby attended a special naming ceremony at a housing development in Eston.
The children took part in a competition recently to name a road leading into the Tees Valley Housing development on Church Lane.
The winning entry, chosen by Southdale Homes, the contractor on the site, is Kel Dennis Close, named after a popular local musical figure and a former music teacher, who sadly died two years ago.
Now two youngsters, one who chose the winning name, have visited the site along with relatives of Mr Dennis, to see the road sign named after 'The Legend', as well as planting a tree and unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.
David Jowsey, a teacher at the school, said: "Kel Dennis was a fabulous friend to the school. His musical expertise and friendly way with all the children allowed them to experience a variety of musical education through Samba, jazz and singing workshops.
"As director of the Eston Action Zone, he was able to bring professional musicians into the classroom and children across the Eston area have benefited from his professional contacts. He is sadly missed."
Last year, pupils from the school were given the opportunity to visit the development to see the work in progress as part of a project about materials and their properties.
The visit to the site allowed the youngsters to have a supervised tour of the site, learn about the materials involved in house building and learn about health and safety on and around construction sites.
Doug Ross, Managing Director for Tees Valley Housing, part of Fabrick Housing Group, said: "It has been great for us to work in partnership with Southdale Homes on this project and our involvement with the school has been fantastic so it is an honour to be able to name the road after such a well-loved local character."
The Church Lane development is a mixture of modern two, three and four bedroom houses designed to the highest standard.
The houses are high quality and have been built to incorporate Eco Homes 'Very Good' and police initiative 'Secured by Design' standards and have been built to the latest government standards.
Paul Moore, Managing Director of Southdale Homes, said: "We are highly delighted with the whole team approach and the sheer amount of effort that has gone in to deliver this quality housing project, which will go a long way to meeting the local identified housing needs in Eston.
"We are delighted that we can continue to deliver successful projects for our valued client and partner, Fabrick Housing Group."
