Winning the Funding Competition

HUNDREDS of new homes have been built after the Spirit Partnership, led by Tees Valley Housing, received more grant funding than any other partnership in the North East.

Spirit sped past its fellow organisations across the region to scoop more than £29m from the first round of the Homes and Communities Agency's National Affordable Homes programme funding - more than £10m more than the next organisation on the list.

By the end of 2008, the partnership, made up of Tees Valley Housing, Erimus Housing, Four Housing Group, Two Castles Housing Association, Coast and Country Housing and Derwentside Homes, had been awarded a total of almost £43m.

Funding included grant for Tees Valley Housing's Discus scheme in York, which is replacing 100 prefabricated bungalows on three sites with 196 new homes including houses, bungalows, apartments and an extra care scheme.

Across the partnership, the organisations aimed to build 313 properties within the year but completed 493; 157% of the target.
